Brief history

Mail was first available in Riley in 1884.

 

Points of interest

Riley Store & Archery Shop is located 28 miles west of Burns at the junction of highways 395 and 20.  The services they provide include a mini-market, fuel, RV spaces, fishing supplies and great information on the fishing at Chickahomony Reservoir located about 5 miles west of Riley on highway 20.

 
 


Crops and soil

Crops grown in the Riley area consist of meadow hay and alfalfa.  The ground is good for growing root crops, the growing season is from late May to early September.

 

The soil is different in many parts of Riley.  You will find that the soil is not well mixed.  In some places it may be sandy and others may be consistent with clay soil.  You may even find both of these soils in the same field.

 

Climate

The climate in the winter is moderate with heavy winds blowing most of the time.  The summer is nice and not too hot.   The temperatures range between the low 80's to middle 90's. The weather is similar to Burns.
